Emerging Leaders
Emerging Leaders
Emerging Leaders is Accent Inns Inc.’s internal leadership training curriculum that will lead you on a journey of self-discovery, learning and transformation. Emerging Leaders is where future leaders in our company earn their Leadership Wings!
You can expect in-person and online sessions designed for employees who want to grow or start their leadership learning towards a future role or grow their leadership skills in three areas of foundational knowledge: Leading Self, Leading Others and Leading the Work.
Being part of this team is a great privilege. I started in the housekeeping department and was given the opportunity to take on a job as one of the front desk agents – completely out of my comfort zone. It’s been an awesome opportunity and I’m just loving it!

Hotels for Frontline Workers
When the pandemic first hit (remember that?) we received a panicked phone call from a local RN who was worried about her team. She had essential nurses sleeping in their cars in between 12-hour shifts because they were so anxious about contracting the virus at work and spreading it to their families.
Accent Inns immediately offered frontline workers in BC a rock-bottom rate so that they could isolate safely. But we didn’t stop there. We launched Hotels for Frontline Workers , a program in partnership with the United Way of Greater Victoria so folks in our community could cover Frontline Workers’ hotel nights. Our community donated over $100,000 in room nights to frontline workers and we couldn’t be more proud of how this initiative helped some of the most deserving folx in our communities.
Caring is the word I use to describe Accent Inns. This company cares about the community and they care about the health and safety of their employees and guests. Most of all, they care enough to make sure that I KNOW that I am valued, that they will ALWAYS have my back and that they actually care about me as an individual, not just another employee. That is why I love working at Accent Inns.
Bonnie
BC Bus Drivers
Right before Transit Appreciation Day in 2021, our teams across BC spread waves of love to transit drivers! Accent Inns staff gave custom thank-you cards with coffee gift cards to their drivers on their regular commutes, but we also flocked to high-traffic bus stops in our neighbourhoods to thank as many drivers as we could!
We gave out hundreds of gift cards and thank you notes, and while we know we weren’t able to thank every driver in the province, we hoped that every transit driver that we encountered felt the love.
Many of our employees take the bus every day and care about their drivers. BC Transit drivers are COVID heroes. They’ve been delivering service throughout the pandemic to get British Columbians where they need to go. We wanted to show them love, appreciation and thanks!
Mandy
Variety, the Children’s Charity
We have been supporting Variety – The Children’s Charity since 2011. Here’s how:
- Free room nights and financial donations. Those room nights go to families in need of accommodation while their child receives medical treatment, offering them some much needed respite.
- In 2020 when travel restrictions were in place, our phones were pretty quiet. So our Reservations team flew in to help call Variety sponsors to sell Boat for Hope raffle tickets.
- Donated revenue from bookings when travel opened in summer 2020 to Variety and did it again for Variety Week in 2021!
When families from Variety stay with us, we form connections with the children and their loved ones. It’s heart-wrenching to witness some of them succumb to their illnesses. These deeply personal relationships exemplify why our partnership with Variety is invaluable to us. While we can’t eradicate their illnesses, we can bring moments of joy, however fleeting, by simply bringing a smile to their faces.

BC Teachers
We gave schools in all of our communities gift baskets loaded with signature Accent Inns rubber duckies – each one reading an adorable book – plus custom bubble baths with labels that encouraged teachers to “leave your troubles in the bubbles!” (Pssst. The ducks also had a secret code on the bottom to give teachers wanting to stay with us a sweet deal!)
We also ran a Facebook contest that gave away two free hotel nights to one lucky school employee…and to everyone who worked at their school. Yes, you read that right – everyone. Congratulations to Rutland Middle School in Kelowna who won!
I love the great team that I work with and the values we all live by. I love that we give back to the community and do fun initiatives as a team. I love learning new things within my role and supporting my team everyday.
Janine
Grocery Store Workers
We love essential workers! But you know what else is essential? Rest. That’s why we visited our local grocery stores up and down BC handing out free two-night-stays at ANY Hotel Zed.
I was really excited to hand out gift cards in our community. The workers reactions were priceless! They couldn’t believe that they were being recognized and it was so nice to do this for them. It made us all feel amazing to thank these grocery store workers that have done so much for us over the pandemic.
Lydia
BC Humane Society
All of our hotels donate $1 from every pet cleaning fee collected at all eight of our pet-friendly hotels to the BC Humane Society, because we paws-itively love all animals!
In Christmas 2022, after a tumultuous year that saw B.C. animal shelters overrun with shelter surrenders, the Humane Society told us that it was harder than ever to find foster families for their needy pups. We launched a campaign that donated 10% of every booking in December to the BCH umane Society to support their need for veterinary care, pet supplies and licensing support.
We also hosted a Puppy Playdate at Accent Inns Victoria to raise awareness and help connect potential foster families with BC Humane Society. The adorable event had foster family applications, two litters of snuggly puppies and all sorts of joy.
I work front desk at Hotel Zed Victoria and I’ve been here for about two years while attending college. I’ve had a wonderful experience growing myself here professionally and personally, while working on my academic pursuits. Everyone here has been super supportive with my personal growth since I’ve started working at Zed and can’t imagine working anywhere else, because the people really make our hotel a special place.

We’re Focusing On

• Create positive change
• Create greater awareness, understanding and empathy within our teams
• Build employee skills & knowledge to effectively manage tricky situations

LGBTQ2+ Community
As a Pride at Work partner, we celebrate all of our employees and their gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Our commitment to the LGBTQ2+ community runs deep—and we are continually upgrading our training and onboarding programs for our team to create a more inclusive and informed environment. You can find Pride Progress flags and gender-neutral public washrooms at all of our properties, and campaigns that ensure that every guest and employee feels comfortable here.
All of our properties are a safe place for all and are officially Rainbow Registered with Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce. The Rainbow Registered Accreditation Program was created to better identify 2SLGBTQIA+ friendly businesses and advance 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
Seeing a Rainbow Registered symbol indicates to consumers that the business meets a stringent set of standards to ensure 2SLGBTQI+ visitors feel safe, welcomed, and accepted. We’re especially proud to have established a revolutionary deadname operating procedure as a key priority in 2022. This ensures that neither guests nor staff who no longer identify with the gender and/or name on their government-issued ID do not need to worry about being deadnamed at our properties.
For the month of February in 2022, Hotel Zed unveiled unique, multimedia Progress Pride Flags in their lobbies and provided queer-friendly Valentine’s Day cards to include the queer community in a holiday that has traditionally overlooked the 2SLGBTQI+ community. It’s crucial to us that all of our marketing campaigns are inclusive and represent a diversity of family structures.
I feel like Accent Inns is my home because I can open up to everyone and it feels so much like a family (more than my own family!) There is no discrimination, and I feel comfortable being myself, which makes me feel truly free.

Indigenous Learning & Reconciliation
We’re so grateful to be able to live and work on traditional, unceded territories of First Nations people, and we strive to build relationships with Indigenous communities and provide ongoing education for all employees at all levels.
When we opened Hotel Zed Tofino, we worked with three local writers to commission a story called ʔiisaak in the Garden (Respect in the Garden) It’s important to us that our guests understand the history of guardianship and activism in this beautiful land that we all enjoy.
We were also the first accommodation partner to become part of the Tribal Park Allies—a community of businesses committed to supporting the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation’s vision of achieving a socially and ecologically just conservation economy, where every dollar spent supports the ecological protection and restoration of the Tribal Parks ancestral gardens and the resurgence of Tla-o-qui-aht culture and governance.
We’re also working to build strong relationships with neighbouring nations: we’ve offered hotel rooms for elders to isolate in during the pandemic, and we hosted a ceremony with four hereditary chiefs to acknowledge and thank the Nuu-Chah-Nulth peoples for allowing us to be on their land.

Anti-Racism
Esteemed educator Roopa Cheema taught our Care Bear team (that’s what we call our Executive Leadership group) about power, privilege, and race in our society with monthly workshops. Roopa also led the Care Bears through a book club, where they read Policing Black Lives by Robyn Maynard and discussed every chapter.
This learning informs company-wide events like Anti Bullying Day, Orange Shirt Day and Mental Health Month where we celebrate diversity. These fun celebrations always include an educational component so the team can engage in meaningful conversations around BIPOC and social issues.
Diversity and Inclusion are a constant topic in HR and recruitment, and a key priority for us at the hotels. We have a connected company culture where every employee feels accepted, valued, and has a sense of belonging. That’s what being in our Fam-Jam is all about! I love being part of an empathetic workplace, where everyone’s feelings are valued and acknowledged.
Julie
Sex Positivity
We believe that everyone deserves to embody, explore and learn about their sexuality without judgment or shame. People have sex in hotel rooms every single day. Yet our industry, and our culture, shies away from talking about sex. We are nonjudgmental and we create space in our hotels and our campaigns to celebrate sex with all consensual adult rebels in every type of relationship!
In 2014, when Hotel Zed first opened, we blew up the traditional Valentine’s Day scene by launching our iconic Nooner package. We encouraged our guests to ditch the boring “roses and chocolate” routine and instead celebrate the holiday of love by booking a cheeky lunch break “Nooner” romp with their Valentine(s). This campaign has evolved to incorporate all kinds of love, and all kinds of sex, including self-love and baby-making love!
I love being a sex-positive hotel. People have great sex in hotel rooms, and people in our industry never talk about it. I believe a healthy sex life is part of your overall wellness. It’s a fantastic way to give your mind and body a boost!
Mandy
I love working at Hotel Zed because I feel empowered and encouraged to be myself every single day. The first few days of my journey working for this company felt like I was shedding tons of dead weight from being a cog in the hospitality machine, at times losing my identity by putting on a facade and just going through the motions of the daily grind. Here, I feel accepted and valued for being myself and “being real” while being mindful with my colleagues and guests.
Jerin
What I love the most about this place is our culture and core values. We are truly a family here. When I am having a difficult day there are always people around me that make it better. We’re a big group of weirdos and it’s absolutely awesome. We all care for one another and are diligent about having each other’s backs. I’ve been in so many kitchens where the only time I’d be around the rest of the team was at work but at ROAR we all go surfing together, hiking together, fishing together. We love spending time with each other outside of the kitchen as much as we do inside of it. It is such a unique environment to be in!
Jamie
I like that we celebrate all the different cultures we have here. The scheduling is flexible, which makes it easy to have a work-life balance and still enjoy coming to work. The Work Perks are great, and I especially appreciate the Live Your Best Life program.
Karman
I love working here because of how evident it is that the company really looks out for our best interests. Investing in our personal development, providing ample benefits that are too plentiful to list, and truly offering a give and take relationship to create an amazing work life balance! This pond is full of stellar ducks I’m so grateful to swim with!
Jennie
Working for Hotel Zed has been my best work experience in the hospitality industry. For the first time in my career, I don’t feel like I am working while I am doing my job. The staff is provided with a lot of trust from the management team and it is a great feeling to work for a company that puts the employees first.

My favourite thing about the Employee Purchase Plan is I never have to worry about buying overpriced mattresses and sheets! I get the best quality stuff at far below retail prices and my sleeps are the best they can be!
Trina
I get to put together our Fam-Jammer monthly newsletter to staff and I love being able to include fun contests for everyone. Pro tip – not that many people enter so your chances of winning are really good!

I love being a sex-positive hotel. People have great sex in hotel rooms, and people in our industry never talk about it. I believe a healthy sex life is part of your overall wellness. It’s a fantastic way to give your mind and body a boost!

The Achieving Awesome Program is nice because it helps with our groceries, or to buy a little something to celebrate that we did a great job! It’s like when you are a student you get good grades as a reward for doing a great job, the program is kind of like getting to see our good grades because we gave it 100%.
Jovi
The Achieving Awesome Program is rewarding to us. We know if we receive our gift card for the month it means we did a great job in some way. It means they appreciate us and that means a lot because we work hard! As employees we always give our best to the guests, and it is nice to get something in return.
Maria
Family Rates is one of my favorite perks! As someone who loves to travel, not only do I get to stay in awesome places around BC for a great rate, I also get to offer my friends and family the same perk. It makes me feel wonderful helping out my friends and family (and showing off my place of work at the same time!)
Taylor
I like the Pickle Program very much, I’m currently working on enacting a Pickler of the month and year version for the staff based on how many the get and received. I find it’s a great way to show appreciation for each other, and get rewarded while doing it.
Jack
With the Employee Referral Program, you get money and you get it right away which is awesome. And then of course you get to bring your own fam-jam into our Fam-Jam! Such a benefit sharing this workplace with friends and family, and a great experience for both parties. You also then get to work with your friends! Winning!
Janine
No matter what way I turn, here the company always has my back. The President of the company has said to call him personally if I need anything to do with my son, who is unwell. The company offered to fly me to Ottawa to be with my son during treatment. When I visit my son in Burnaby, I don’t ever have to pay for my stay. No matter what I need if they can possibly do it, they will. I cannot say enough good things about working here.
Marcy
I love interacting with guests. I love the way we co-operate as a team and everyone is so understanding with so much love and care. Also, our benefits ROCK!
Alisha
You are allowed and encouraged to contribute ideas, and they are valued and listened to.
Amy
You can use your own judgement on how to support our guests. Management is approachable not just in my department, but across properties. And I love my team.
Harry
You get to be yourself, and don’t have to be scripted. I love the friendships I have created at the hotel that are very meaningful. It is also a super fun and flexible environment!
Pryanika
The people and energy are really warm. The fact that mistakes are welcome makes you feel comfortable and able to really be yourself.
Tanmayi
I love working here because of all of the unique benefits and because the team is so helpful. Everyone brings a smile to my life, and are always there for me.

The crazy part about the Got Your Back Fund is that I didn’t have to ask or apply. My boss knows me and cares about me enough to actually know how I am doing. When she called me to tell me that they knew we were having a tough time and offered to pay for my daughter’s tutoring, I was taken back by emotions. My daughter (age 14) moved up three reading grades in just over three months. I genuinely love Accent Inns and cannot be more thankful to work here.
Lindsay
I love working here because I work with the Ultimate Hugger – the staff are so supportive and fun and makes work not seem like work!
Laura
Why I love working here: great staff, awesome workplace culture, sweet benefits and lots of parties and celebrations!
Mary
I love working here because of Mandy Farmer. As a CEO, I feel she truly cares about each and every employee that works for her company. She is always excited to see us and talk with us. Knowing someone who cares that much about us in her position is amazing.
Verona
I love working here because of the family atmosphere we receive from Management. I have worked here for a very long time, and I have always felt cared for and taken care of by this company. What this company does for its employees is something I have never seen before.
Maria
I love this company because there is room for growth and opportunities. I have gone from working in laundry up to management in 3.5 years!
Crystal
I love working here because of our culture. I love how open management, VP’s, and even Mandy is to suggestions and ideas no matter who it is from. I also love the benefits of working here whether it be the great deals at other properties or to be able to give back to our community in a fun way.
Emily
When I transitioned from Accent Inns Kelowna to Hotel Zed Kelowna, I was nervous about the change, but was soon relieved as the team from Hotel Zed accepted me right away as family. There was really no surprise here as that is who we are!

I feel like Accent Inns is my home because I can open up to everyone and it feels so much like a family (more than my own family!) There is no discrimination, and I feel comfortable being myself, which makes me feel truly free.

It’s a very welcoming environment where you can be yourself and there are no judgments. Everybody gets along with one another and it’s a sense of community where everyone supports each other.

I love the great team that I work with and the values we all live by. I love that we give back to the community and do fun initiatives as a team. I love learning new things within my role and supporting my team everyday.

For me, Accent Inns had my back while I was off for personal reasons for two years and I really appreciate it. We are treated like family. I also love that we are always innovating and constantly upgrading our standards and keeping relevant.
Madhu
I love doing morning yoga with the team as we stretch at the start of our housekeeping day – super fun and different from anywhere I’ve worked before. I love being so close to the ocean and nature as this is a special serene location. I work with an amazing team and the leadership is super nice and supportive.
Jonathan
I love how diverse this company is and how I get to work and interact with lots of interesting people. The Work Perks are amazing, and I feel so cared about and genuinely feel like the company wants us to feel happy and loved.
Laura
After many years of being a stay-at-home Mom, I was nervous to re-enter the workforce, however, I was warmly welcomed at Hotel Zed Victoria. It was fun, friendly and flexible, allowing me to create a perfect balance between work and home. Through teamwork and dedication, I have made some of my very best friends and can’t imagine working anywhere else.

Hotel Zed is a great place to work, and they have all sorts of great opportunities. The work is varied, and I was even given the opportunity to work at one of the other hotels when they were in a pinch. There’s a great feeling of team spirit. I love the amazing staff meals prepared by ROAR and best of all, on days when I can finish early, I can go surfing right across the road at Chesterman Beach.
Avery
I love working at Hotel Zed because of what it stands for. I want to represent a company that reflects on my beliefs and values as a person, and this is by far the most inclusive, positive and humble place I have been employed at. Along with that, I have created a family here. There is a strong community who has your back throughout everything. My future goals and plans have always been accommodated to and an interest to everyone. I have been here four months and I still feel like I’m on vacation everyday even while working full-time. I wish everyone had a chance to experience a company like this.
Kaylan
Working at ROAR has been a joy! This community of people are becoming more like a family. Workers are supported and individuality is embraced. I love the involvement in local charities and organizations and, of course, the passion for food and service. There are many reasons to be proud to work for this company.
Brian
The quality of staff at Hotel Zed and ROAR are what make it an exceptional place to work. The community that I’ve found while working and living here is one that I’ve found belonging in and call my home. This is supported by a company that actually cares about its individual employees and values their mental health.

I enjoy working here because of the people that I meet. The staff is very helpful, and management is always there for us. Everyday I am doing something different, whether that is helping a guest bring stuff to their room, learning how to work TV’s or helping elderly guests with their luggage. Even if I am having a bad day, this place always puts a smile on my face when I walk through the door.
Jay
I feel valued for my contributions. There is so much room to grow, and I have got to learn so many different positions that allow me to continuously develop and build strong relationships. I love the people I work with, which makes every day so much fun, but also have a great work-life balance.
